Paintings
I carry around an image in my head of a painting I saw once. A dark work, with a pale human face of distinctive, subtle curves and expressive qualities in the fore -- so sad. A girl's face, with a freckle here and there, and eyes staring into the dark world. She's holding an umbrella against the gray rain -- I took the umbrella at first to be a black wing looming over her, but it was only a trick of my mind at the time to interpret it that way, as she is quite alone. A few amorphous black figures are in the background, but they are behind her. It's difficult for me to escape that image -- it keeps me cold on warm nights.
